Common Use
Zetia is an antihyperlipidemic agent used to treat high levels of blood cholesterol. It is most effective when combined with a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet. Zetia is also prescribed to reduce elevated levels of sitosterol and campesterol (plant sterols) in the blood. However, clinical studies indicate that Zetia does not prevent heart disease or heart attacks directly.
Dosage and Direction
Zetia is taken orally once daily, with or without food or milk. The standard recommended dose is 10 mg once per day. In cases where a more significant reduction in LDL cholesterol (over 55%) is needed, patients may be prescribed a combination therapy with statins, often starting at 10–40 mg daily. Always follow your doctor’s prescription exactly to ensure optimal results.
Precautions
Zetia should only be taken under medical supervision. If you have liver disease or are pregnant, Zetia should generally not be used, particularly when taken with statins. If you consume large quantities of alcohol, you should be closely monitored during treatment. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid taking Zetia unless absolutely necessary.
Contraindications
Zetia should not be used in individuals who are allergic to any of its components. The combination of Zetia with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) is contraindicated in patients with active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes. Statins, including those taken with Zetia, are contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to risks such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis.
Possible Side Effects
Serious side effects may include allergic reactions, unusual muscle pain or weakness, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), nausea, clay-colored stools, stomach pain, pancreatitis, and severe skin reactions with blisters or peeling. Less serious side effects can include headache, tiredness, dizziness, mild stomach discomfort, diarrhea, joint or back pain, cough, cold symptoms, or a depressed mood. If any unusual symptoms occur, stop using Zetia and consult your doctor immediately.
Drug Interaction
Zetia can interact with several medications, including cholestyramine (Prevalite, Questran), colestipol (Colestid), colesevelam (Welchol), gemfibrozil (Lopid), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune, Gengraf), and blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin). Drug interactions do not always mean one medication must be stopped, but they can affect how each drug works. Discuss with your doctor how such interactions should be managed.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Zetia, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Overdose
Although symptoms of Zetia overdose are not well known, it may still be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention.
Storage
Store Zetia at room temperature, between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F), away from moisture, light, children, and pets. Do not use the medication past its expiration date.
