Common Use
Actos is used to manage high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus). This condition occurs when the body doesn’t properly respond to insulin, either due to insufficient insulin production or insulin resistance. Actos improves the body’s sensitivity to insulin and decreases sugar production in the liver. It can be used alone or in combination with insulin or other oral diabetes medications such as glipizide, glyburide, or metformin.
Dosage and Administration
Take Actos orally once daily, with or without food, as prescribed by your doctor.
-
Dosage is individualized based on your condition and other diabetes medications you may be taking.
-
Take the medication at the same time each day for best results.
-
Regular blood glucose monitoring is necessary.
-
It may take 2–3 months before the full effect of the drug is seen.
-
Continue all other diabetes medications as directed by your doctor.
Precautions
Before starting Actos, inform your doctor if you:
-
Are allergic to Actos or other glitazones (rosiglitazone, troglitazone)
-
Have type 1 diabetes, heart failure (especially newly diagnosed or worsening), diabetic ketoacidosis, or liver problems
-
Have a history of heart disease, fluid retention (edema), anemia, or lung issues
Use caution when performing tasks that require alertness (e.g., driving) as low or high blood sugar can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision.
Avoid alcohol, as it may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Women with fertility issues may experience increased ovulation. Use reliable birth control while taking Actos.
Actos should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Your doctor may switch you to insulin.
Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medication—consult your doctor before nursing.
