Common Use
Acyclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by the herpes virus. These include herpes simplex affecting the skin, lips, and genitals, herpes zoster (shingles), and chickenpox. It works by stopping the replication of the virus but is not effective against viral infections such as the common cold.
Dosage and Direction
Acyclovir can be taken with or without food or milk. A typical dosage for initial herpes treatment is 200 mg taken every four hours, five times a day, for ten days. For recurrent herpes, adults may be prescribed 400 mg twice daily for up to one year. Wash your hands before and after use to help prevent spreading the infection. Always follow your doctor’s prescription and instructions for best results.
Precautions
Avoid allowing infected areas to come into contact with others. Do not touch your eyes after handling a sore or lesion. Inform your doctor if you have a history of kidney or liver disease before using Acyclovir. The cream should not be used during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or while trying to become pregnant without medical advice. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while on this medication.
Contraindications
Acyclovir should not be used by individuals who are allergic to Acyclovir, Zovirax, or similar drugs. It is also not recommended for people with certain kidney disorders unless under close medical supervision.
Possible Side Effects
Some users may experience allergic reactions such as hives, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat. Other serious side effects may include pain in the lower back, reduced urination, easy bruising or bleeding, and unusual weakness. Less severe effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, stomach pain, headache, lightheadedness, or swelling in the hands or feet. Any unusual or severe side effects should be reported to a doctor immediately.
Drug Interaction
Acyclovir may interact with other medications including probenecid, tizanidine, varicella virus vaccine, phenytoin, fosphenytoin, and valproic acid. Drug interactions do not always require discontinuing one of the medications, but they may affect how the drugs work. Consult your doctor about any medications you are taking to determine how they might interact with Acyclovir.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is close to the time of your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once to make up for the missed one.
Overdose
Symptoms of an overdose may include seizures, hallucinations, and a decrease or absence of urination. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention.
Storage
Store Acyclovir at room temperature between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius (59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit), away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not use the medication after the expiration date. Consult your pharmacist on how to properly dispose of unused medication.
