Common Use
Claritin is an antihistamine used primarily to alleviate symptoms associated with seasonal allergies. These symptoms may include sneezing, watery eyes, nasal congestion, and itching of the nose or throat. In addition to treating allergic rhinitis, Claritin also helps relieve skin irritation, redness, and itching caused by hives. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body responsible for allergic reactions.
Dosage and Direction
Claritin should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The usual dose for adults and children over six years of age is 10 milligrams once daily. This may be taken either as one tablet or two teaspoonfuls of the liquid form. For individuals with liver or kidney issues, a reduced dosage of 10 milligrams every other day is typically recommended. Children aged two to five are usually prescribed one teaspoonful of the syrup once a day. If these children also suffer from liver or kidney conditions, the dosage is adjusted to one teaspoonful every other day. Always consult a healthcare professional before beginning treatment to ensure proper dosing and optimal results.
Precautions
Caution is advised when using Claritin in individuals with liver or kidney problems, as it may cause increased drowsiness. Older adults may also experience heightened sensitivity to this effect. Claritin should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless explicitly directed by a doctor. It is important to consult your physician before starting this medication if you are expecting, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.
Contraindications
Claritin should not be used by individuals with known hypersensitivity to loratadine or any of the product’s components. It is also not suitable for patients with severe kidney or liver failure, or for children under the age of two. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid using Claritin unless advised otherwise by their doctor.
Possible Side Effects
Some individuals may experience side effects while taking Claritin. Serious reactions could include hives, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, jaundice, or seizures. Less severe side effects may include headaches, nervousness, fatigue, drowsiness, gastrointestinal discomfort such as stomach pain or diarrhea, dry mouth, sore throat, blurred vision, eye redness, nosebleeds, or skin rash. If any side effect is persistent, severe, or unusual, you should stop taking the medication and consult your doctor immediately.
Drug Interaction
Claritin may interact with other medications, including cimetidine (Tagamet) and ketoconazole (Nizoral). While drug interactions do not always require discontinuing a medication, they can affect the effectiveness or safety of treatment. It is essential to inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking to ensure that all interactions are properly managed.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember on the same day. However, if it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed dose.
Overdose
Signs of overdose may include headache, rapid heartbeat, and excessive drowsiness. If an overdose is suspected, seek immediate medical attention for appropriate care.
Storage
Store Claritin at room temperature, ideally between 15 to 25 degrees Celsius (59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit), away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets, and do not use it beyond the expiration date.
