Common Use
Glipizide is an oral medication from the sulfonylurea class used to treat type 2 diabetes. It helps lower blood sugar by stimulating the pancreas to release insulin. Other drugs in this class include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (Micronase, Diabeta), tolbutamide (Orinase), and tolazamide (Tolinase).
Dosage and Administration
Do not change your dose of Glipizide without first consulting your doctor.
-
Immediate-release tablets: The typical starting dose is 5 mg, taken 30 minutes before a meal. The maximum daily dose is 40 mg.
-
Extended-release tablets: The maximum dose should not exceed 20 mg per day.
Take the tablet with a full glass of water before meals. For best results, take Glipizide consistently at the same time each day.
Precautions
Glipizide may increase the risk of cardiovascular death. Avoid alcohol, as it may lower your blood sugar unpredictably. Do not chew, crush, or split extended-release tablets; swallow them whole. Monitor your blood sugar regularly and inform your doctor of any symptoms or changes in your health.
