Common Use
Digoxin, derived from the foxglove plant Digitalis lanata, is used to treat various heart conditions including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and heart failure.
Dosage and Direction
Take Lanoxin orally with a full glass of water. For best results, take it on an empty stomach—at least one hour before or two hours after meals. Do not take more than the prescribed dose and do not stop using the medicine unless advised by your doctor. It may take some time before you notice the full benefits of the medication. Always consult your doctor for the appropriate dosage tailored to your condition.
Precautions
Before using Lanoxin, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. You should also disclose if you have any heart rhythm disorders, other forms of heart disease, a history of heart attack, kidney or liver problems. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their physician before use. Avoid alcohol and smoking during treatment, as they may affect the effectiveness of the medication. Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects and should be monitored carefully.
Contraindications
Lanoxin is contraindicated in patients who have shown hypersensitivity to digoxin or any of its components.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects may include dizziness, constipation, facial flushing, headache, and weakness. Serious allergic reactions are rare, and most individuals do not experience severe side effects. If you notice any unusual symptoms not listed here, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Drug Interaction
Inform your doctor about all prescription, non-prescription, and herbal medications you are taking before starting Lanoxin. It may interact with beta-blockers, certain cancer treatments, diet pills, and tetracycline antibiotics, among others. Always seek professional advice to avoid harmful interactions.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing routine. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Symptoms may include chest pain, nausea, irregular heartbeat, light-headedness, or fainting.
Storage
Store Lanoxin at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C), in a dry place away from light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
