Common Use
Lozol is a thiazide-like diuretic used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. Its active substance is Indapamide, a benzamide-sulfonamide-indole compound. It works by altering sodium reabsorption in the loop of Henle in the kidneys, increasing the excretion of sodium (Na⁺), chloride (Cl⁻), potassium (K⁺), and magnesium (Mg²⁺). Lozol requires long-term use to be effective; the therapeutic effect typically begins within 1–2 weeks, peaks by 8–12 weeks, and may persist for up to 8 weeks after stopping the medication.
Dosage and Administration
-
Take once daily, preferably in the morning before breakfast, with or without food.
-
The usual starting dose is 1.25 mg per day, which may be increased up to 5 mg daily if needed.
-
Always follow your doctor’s instructions exactly.
Precautions
Lozol can lead to significant loss of electrolytes, particularly potassium, especially in elderly women.
Signs of low potassium (hypokalemia) include:
-
Muscle weakness
-
Irregular or rapid heartbeat
To compensate, your doctor may recommend potassium-rich foods or supplements.
Risk factors for hypokalemia include:
-
High doses of Lozol
-
Cirrhosis
-
Use of corticosteroids or ACTH
Regular monitoring is advised for:
-
Blood pressure
-
Serum potassium, sodium, magnesium
-
Glucose, uric acid, and kidney function tests
Extra care is needed for people with:
-
Gout or hyperuricemia
-
Liver or kidney disease
-
Diabetes
-
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
Contraindications
Do not use Lozol if you have:
-
Allergy to Indapamide or related compounds
-
Severe liver or kidney failure (anuria)
-
Low potassium levels (hypokalemia)
-
Lactose intolerance, galactosemia, or glucose malabsorption syndromes (if the product contains lactose)
-
Cerebrovascular accident with edema
-
Decompensated diabetes with ketoacidosis
Use caution if you have:
-
Water-electrolyte imbalance
-
Moderate liver/kidney dysfunction
-
Ascites
-
Coronary artery disease or heart failure
-
Hyperparathyroidism
-
Hyperuricemia (gout)
-
Are pregnant, breastfeeding, elderly, or under 18 years of age
Possible Side Effects
Side effects depend on dosage and may include:
-
Dizziness, headache, back pain
-
Agitation, anxiety, nervousness
-
Numbness or tingling in hands/feet
-
Muscle cramps or spasms
-
Fatigue, weakness, loss of energy
-
Abdominal pain, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
-
Infection, nasal inflammation, tension, irritability
Drug Interactions
Lozol may cause low potassium (hypokalemia) and low magnesium (hypomagnesemia), which can increase the risk of fatal arrhythmias in patients taking:
-
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
-
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Also:
-
Diuretics reduce lithium clearance, increasing risk of lithium toxicity
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, skip it if it’s almost time for the next one.
Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. Continue with your normal schedule.
Overdose
Seek emergency medical attention if you suspect an overdose. Symptoms may include:
-
Nausea, vomiting
-
Weakness
-
Stomach pain
-
Electrolyte imbalances
Storage
Store at 15–30°C (59–86°F), away from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
