Common Use
Mircette is a combination oral contraceptive containing desogestrel and ethinyl estradiol. It works by preventing ovulation and altering the cervical mucus and uterine lining to hinder sperm movement and the implantation of a fertilized egg. This dual action helps to effectively prevent pregnancy.
Dosage and Direction
Use Mircette exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Begin taking it on the first day of your menstrual cycle or on the first Sunday after your period begins. If this is your first time using Mircette, additional contraception such as condoms may be required during the first week. Mircette comes in 28-day packs, including seven ‘reminder’ pills. Your menstrual bleeding typically begins while taking these inactive pills. Mild breakthrough bleeding may occur, but if it becomes heavy or persistent, consult your doctor. Take one pill at the same time each day. After completing a pack, start the next one immediately without skipping days. If you require surgery or medical testing, you may be advised to stop the medication temporarily.
Precautions
You may need to use backup birth control when starting Mircette. Hormonal contraceptives may increase the risk of serious cardiovascular issues such as blood clots, heart attacks, or strokes, particularly in smokers and those over age 35. Notify your healthcare provider if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, cholesterol issues, depression, seizures, diabetes, gallbladder disorders, varicose veins, uterine fibroids, tuberculosis, or breast-related issues like fibrocystic disease, nodules, or lumps.
Contraindications
Mircette should not be taken if you are pregnant or have recently given birth. It is also contraindicated for individuals with a history of blood clots, stroke, circulation problems, hormone-sensitive cancers, liver disease, severe high blood pressure, migraines with aura, or those who experienced jaundice while previously taking birth control pills.
Side Effects
Potential side effects include allergic reactions such as rash, hives, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing. More serious symptoms may involve sudden numbness or weakness, vision issues, confusion, slurred speech, migraine changes, chest pain, nausea, sweating, limb swelling, depression, appetite loss, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, and jaundice. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms.
Drug Interaction
Mircette may interact with several medications. Inform your healthcare provider about all drugs, supplements, and herbal products you use. Notable interactions include theophylline, acetaminophen (Tylenol), vitamin C, prednisolone, St. John’s wort, seizure medications, cyclosporine, barbiturates, HIV/AIDS treatments, and certain antibiotics.
Missed Dose
Missing a pill can increase the risk of pregnancy. If you miss one active pill, take two pills the next day and continue your regular schedule. If two active pills are missed in the first or second week, take two pills daily for two days, then resume your schedule and use a backup contraceptive for seven days. If you miss two active pills in the third week or three pills at any time, discard the current pack and start a new one as if beginning from day one. If you miss reminder pills, discard them and continue the pack as usual. Missing multiple pills may cause you to miss your period that month. If you miss two consecutive periods, consult your doctor.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and abnormal vaginal bleeding. Contact emergency medical services immediately if overdose is suspected.
Storage
Store Mircette at room temperature between 20–25°C (68–77°F), away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Do not store it in the bathroom and keep it out of reach of children.
