Common Use
Nimotop contains nimodipine, a medication used to prevent or relieve spasms of blood vessels caused by agents like serotonin or histamine. Due to its high lipophilicity, it crosses the blood-brain barrier effectively and improves the stability and functional capacity of neurons. Nimotop is also believed to enhance memory and learning by blocking calcium (Ca2+) channels in specific brain regions such as the hippocampus and cerebral cortex.
Dosage and Direction
Take Nimotop exactly as prescribed by your physician. Do not exceed the recommended dosage. It should be taken orally on an empty stomach with a full glass of water, ideally one hour before or two hours after a meal. For optimal results, take the medication regularly and do not skip doses.
Precautions
Use caution if you have severe bradycardia, liver failure, mild to moderate hypotension, left ventricular failure following a myocardial infarction, increased intracranial pressure, or generalized brain edema. Avoid consuming grapefruit juice while taking Nimotop, as it can interfere with the drug’s metabolism. Effectiveness of Nimotop may be reduced when taken with rifampicin. Co-administration with cimetidine or valproic acid can raise nimodipine levels in the bloodstream. Taking beta-blockers alongside Nimotop may result in a significant drop in blood pressure. Using Nimotop with procainamide or quinidine increases the risk of QT interval prolongation.
Contraindications
Nimotop should not be used in individuals with known hypersensitivity to nimodipine, in cases of severe hypotension, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Possible Side Effects
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, facial swelling, or hives. Notify your doctor promptly if you experience symptoms like fainting, severe dizziness, unusually fast or slow heartbeats, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual fatigue, or swelling of the legs or ankles.
Drug Interaction
Inform your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications or supplements you are taking. Concurrent use of nimodipine with fluoxetine can increase nimodipine levels in the blood. Long-term use with nortriptyline may cause a slight rise in nimodipine concentration. Prior long-term use of phenobarbital, phenytoin, or carbamazepine may reduce nimodipine’s bioavailability.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing routine. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Overdose
Signs of overdose include chest pain, dizziness, fainting, weakness, shortness of breath, abnormal heart rate, confusion, slurred speech, or loss of consciousness. Seek emergency medical attention if you suspect an overdose.
Storage
Store Nimotop in a tightly closed container in a dry place away from light at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
