Generic Plavix (Clopidogrel)

Common Use
Plavix specifically and actively inhibits platelet aggregation (blood clotting) and helps dilate coronary blood vessels. It is prescribed to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes caused by blood clots in individuals with a recent history of stroke, heart attack, or peripheral vascular disease. Plavix is also used to prevent ischemic events such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and thrombosis in peripheral arteries.

Dosage and Direction
Plavix should be taken once daily, with or without food, exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Precautions
Because Plavix is a blood thinner, it is important to avoid combining it with aspirin or other NSAIDs unless specifically advised by your doctor. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience signs of internal bleeding, such as black or bloody stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, or coughing up blood.

Contraindications
Plavix should not be used in individuals with hypersensitivity to the drug, severe liver failure, active bleeding, stomach or duodenal ulcers, ulcerative colitis, tuberculosis, or other conditions that predispose to bleeding. It is also contraindicated during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in newborns. Caution should be taken when used by patients with moderate liver or kidney impairment.

Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include bleeding in the stomach or intestines, hemorrhagic stroke, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, abdominal pain, indigestion, gastritis, constipation, gastrointestinal ulcers, diarrhea, and allergic reactions.

Drug Interaction
Concurrent use of Plavix with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Using Plavix with Coumadin (warfarin) may raise warfarin levels and further increase bleeding risk. Always inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are taking.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include vomiting, fatigue, shortness of breath, diarrhea, rash, itching, or signs of internal bleeding. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms.

Storage
Store Plavix tablets or capsules at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C (59°F–86°F), in a dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children and pets.
